By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing

“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m thrilled to feature Douglas Burdett, principal of Artillery (a world-class marketing agency) and host of The Marketing Book Podcast.  Seriously, if you aren’t listening to his podcast, you’re missing a firehose of new marketing insights, authors, best practices and more.

Douglas is a heavily-decorated marketing influencer and author, a veteran of some of marketing’s most storied advertising agencies, and a great guy.  Suffice it to say, Douglas gets stuff done.  Here in his own words is how he does it.

Location:  Norfolk, Virginia

Current computers:  iMac (one each at home and office) and a MacBook Air

Current mobile devices:  iPhone 5S (it keeps working!), iPad

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without?  Evernote, Waze, Google Office Suite, Skype, DropBox, Slack, Chrome, The 7 Minute Workout, Overcast (for listening to podcasts)

What’s your workspace like?  It’s a rectangular loft with a concrete floor and windows the full length of two entire, adjoining walls. On the other, non-window walls is tan camouflage netting from floor to ceiling.  Some of the furniture is made of wooden artillery ammo boxes. Lots of plants and bookshelves filled with marketing and sales books.  And a life-size cardboard cutout of Elvis Presley in his U.S. Army uniform.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack?  I removed from my iPhone the Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn apps.  Try it, you’ll like it!

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Playing Trivial Pursuit.

What’s your favorite to-do list manager?  Nozbe.

What do you listen to while at work?  Nothing but the voices in my head.

What are you currently reading? Full Funnel Marketing by Matt Heinz. Just kidding I read that before interviewing Matt for The Marketing Book Podcast not too long ago.  I interview one author per week, which allows me to read their book just before each podcast interview.

Right now I’m reading The Customer Loyalty Loop: The Science Behind Creating Great Experiences and Lasting Impressions by Noah Fleming (as I write this, I’m interviewing him next week).

What’s your sleep routine like?  On my iPhone, I use the Bedtime feature on the clock. At 9:30pm it reminds me to go to bed and at 6:00am it has a gentle alarm that wakes me up.  I allegedly snore, so I put a Breathe Right Nasal Strip on my nose and a Zyppah anti-snoring device in my mouth. Those two things help me get a great night’s sleep.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  A friend of mine, Brad McDonald, who works for Sandler Training (Corporate) maintains there are three keys to success:

  1. Take responsibility for yourself.
  2. Do what you say you’re going to do.
  3. You’ll get what you inspect, not what you expect.

Anything else you want to add?  On The Marketing Book Podcast, each week I publish an interview with the author of a new marketing or sales book. The podcast has been listed as one of “10 Podcasts That Will Make You A Better Marketer.”

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see James P. Connolly (my favorite comedian) answer these questions.
