“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Lauren Harper, senior manager of social marketing for the Oracle Marketing Cloud.
I definitely feel old when I can say something like “I’ve literally watched her grow up in the B2B industry.” But I’ve known Lauren since she literally began in B2B in 2010. Since then she’s been a mainstay on the event and content circuit, authoring numerous blogs for Eloqua and now Oracle, and recapping some of the industry’s most important conferences and launches over the past six-plus years.
Lauren, suffice it to say, gets stuff done. Here in her own words is how she does it.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, Uber (I don’t own a car), The Weather Center app (I travel a lot), Spotify…and FarmHeros (I’ll admit it, I’m addicted).
What’s your workspace like? I’m usually surrounded by notebooks filled with To Do lists and meeting notes. I feel a huge sense of accomplishment when I am able to cross off a task on my list. I am a visual learner, so being able to write things out tends to help me remember things and stay organized.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? I’ll address the lifehack portion of this question and perhaps come at it somewhat differently. My lifehack piece of advice is humor. Laugh. Smile. Whatever that means for you, whether it’s taking the time to read the comics in the newspaper, or reading that BuzzFeed article, find something every day that makes you laugh. Life is short so find those things that bring you joy. Added perk: laughing burns calories.
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? This is going to sound bad, but I’m phenomenal at procrastinating.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Like I mentioned before, I usually have a physical notebook (GASP!) with me to jot down my To Do lists and other various notes. I also use the Notes app on my phone all the time, mostly because I have my phone on me all the time, and I like that it syncs with my iPad. Gotta love the cloud.
What do you listen to while at work? I love listening to Spotify at work. The music changes with my mood, but it can be anything from a Dave Matthews Band playlist to 90’s throwback, to EDM.
What are you currently reading? I just started reading Driving Demand by Carlos Hidalgo. I’m also reading a murder mystery series by James Patterson. The book in this series I’m currently reading is titled Alert. I absolutely love reading, so tweet me any book recommendations you have @LaurenEHarper.
What’s your sleep routine like? Growing up I was always the type of person to go to bed late and sleep in late. However I have recently switched my gym routine to the mornings, so now, (when I’m actually home and not traveling) I try to go to bed by 10-11pm and am up at 5:30am. Although on the weekends I still tend to stay up late and sleep in late. And yes, I am that person who checks their phone as soon as they wake up and right before going to bed.
Anything else you want to add? When I worked at Eloqua, the internal motto that we used was Get It Done, Do It Right. It was ingrained into every aspect of our culture and our approach to business. To this day, this phrase resonates with me and I consistently refer back to it. Go get it done, and do it right.
