By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing

“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m excited to feature Carol Krol, editor-in-chief of DemandGen Report.  Carol has a long history of covering the B2B space, including stints at Direct Marketing News, eMarketer, CBS Interactive, Crain Communications, Advertising Age and more.  She’s literally one of the most powerful people in B2B marketing.

Carol, suffice it to say, gets stuff done.  Here in her own words is how she does it.

Location: I work from my home office in New York City, and twice a week I commute to the office in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.

Current computers: MacBook Pro

Current mobile devices: iPhone 6, iPad mini

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Gmail, Google Drive, Evernote, LinkedIn, Twitter, Slack, Uber and Venmo.

What’s your workspace like? When I’m at the office, I sit at whatever desk is free that day. At home, my desk is situated by the window. It’s lovely when the sun streams through in the morning, but I usually have to shut the windows and go on mute on conference calls because of occasional sirens. I have a tiny knight on horseback figurine on my desk that I got at The Cloisters years ago. It’s been a constant on my work desk for more than a decade, and it inspires me to be brave and fearless.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or life hack? I stick with one task at a time.  Multi-tasking almost never works. I also write everything down. I tend to tackle big editing and writing projects early in the day.

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? I make the best New York cheesecake. I’m also a great proofreader. Not much gets by me.

What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Nozbe. It really keeps me on track, and it integrates with Evernote.

What do you listen to while at work? Nothing. I love music, but I’m all about the lyrics, so I find listening to most music while working is a distraction.

What are you currently reading? I downloaded “Lean In” ages ago, but just began reading it last week on a flight home from San Francisco.

What’s your sleep routine like? I try to get 7-8 hours a night; in reality, I fluctuate between 6-7 hours.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? I used to have a terrible habit of interrupting people. It’s annoying, and it also prevents you from listening carefully. I’m from a huge family — one of 10 — and you had to interrupt sometimes to get Mom’s attention. A former boss and mentor pointed it out, gently, years ago and I’ve been practicing listening and not interrupting ever since.

Anything else you want to add? Surround yourself with smart people, work hard for work-life balance, find your passion and have fun!

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see BLANK answer these questions. I’d love to see Andrew Gaffney, President of G3 Communications and Editorial Director of Demand Gen Report answer these questions.
