By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing
“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Alexandra Gibson, chief marketing officer for EventFarm. A native of Idaho living in Washington DC, and newly married last month, Gibson is a proven marketing leader having lead teams and revenue at companies such as Contactually, OttoPilot Media, Aspen Associates and more.
Live music, martinis, digital marketing – she does it all. Suffice it to say, Alexandra gets stuff done. Here in her own words is how she does it.
Location: Washington, DC
Current computers: 13″ MacBook Air
Current mobile devices: iPhone 6S
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Work-related: Slack, HubSpot, Salesforce, Canva, Gmail/Google Apps; Personally: Spotify, Waze, Uber/Lyft, Venmo, Pinterest.
What’s your workspace like? Messier than I would like. Notepads and pens, usually a Diet Coke. Little notes to myself. Instead of tidying it, I usually go to another part of the office.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Buffer. I also started picking out my clothes the night before work because I spend too much time staring into my closet saying “I have nothing to wear.” Picking out my clothes the night before kind of feels like my mom doing it in elementary school but it works. Thanks Mom!
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Coming up with catchy titles for things (blog posts, puppies, product lines, etc.).
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Poppin “Things-to-Do” task pads and a Moleskine notebook. Writing it down means it’s staring me in the face. There’s also something very satisfying with literally checking things off a list. In fact, I’m about to check off “Matt Heinz ‘How I Work’ interview.” Ahh, serenity now.
What do you listen to while at work? If I’m doing reporting, I listen to electronic. Otherwise, I’m mostly of the indie persuasion. Dating back to college, I always concentrated better with headphones in so even if I’m alone, I like listening with headphones rather than ambient music.
What are you currently reading? Furiously Happy: A Funny Book About Horrible Things by Jenny Lawson. If you have a dark sense of humor, you’ll find it hysterical.
What’s your sleep routine like? Every night…and sometimes Saturday afternoons.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Whether it be a company or a friend or a boyfriend “they have to be ready for, and worthy of, your gift.” I learned that from Tom Searcy. It’s a powerful 2 part question.
Anything else you want to add? Event Farm is the best event marketing software for people who want measure the ROI of their events. [shameless plug but I am a marketer]
