By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing
“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Paralee Walls, Director of Content Marketing for Kapost. Somehow she juggles work, family, and a love for snowboard, dogs, craft beer and bacon. And apparently also oxford commas (you’ll have to ask her about that one).
Here in her own words is how she does it.
Location: Boulder, CO
Current computers: MacBook Air
Current mobile devices: Nexus 5X
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Kapost! Slack, Zoom, Hangouts
What’s your workspace like? Open, breezy, and very collaborative. Lots of great conversations around the La Croix cooler.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Having set times to read and answer email instead of responding to them as they come in. Rarely does an email need immediate attention and if the need is great, the sender will Slack/Hangouts/call me to resolve right away.
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Keeping the atmosphere positive and productive. It is easy to get bogged down and complain about things you have no control over, but don’t do it! Tackle what you control with your best effort and you’d be amazed how much more positive you feel about everything else.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Currently, Todoist. But I switch it up every few weeks between Keep, Evernote, Google Calendar Reminders, and plain ol’ sticky notes.
What do you listen to while at work? When I’m writing or researching, it has to be Miles Davis. If I’m doing something a bit more monotonous, I have a great dance mix to keep me energized.
What are you currently reading? Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss and The CMO’s Periodic Table by Drew Neisser
What¹s your sleep routine like? I have a new baby, so as early as possible and usually as late as he allows.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Lean in. And don’t wait for someone else to recognize you for who you are, what you are great at, or what job you really want; take the initiative and tell the people who need to know.
Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see Michelle Obama answer these questions.
