“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

This week I’m excited to feature Ray Rebello, Director of Product Marketing for Acumatica, a long-time friend and one of the best product marketing minds I know. Ray has led product marketing efforts for companies such as Microsoft, Market Leader, Western Computer and more. Here in his own words is how he gets so much done.

First thing you do when you come into work? Get a coffee and check email
What is your email management strategy?
- Look for priority items first
- Flag the ones that I cannot do immediately and move on
- If there are items to delegate, get those to the right person
- Delete & block the junk (I get a lot of it)
Most essential app when traveling? Google maps
How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? Morning meditation every day
What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance?
- It will never get all done.
- Prioritize and work on the things that make a difference.
- Try not to work to many late evenings.
- Schedule non-work activities a couple of nights a week.
Are there any work rituals critical to your success? Deliver on what I promise
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? I use Google search for so many things and I would miss that if I no longer had it
What’s your workspace like? At the office, I have a desk at with two monitors and sit 4 feet from the person next to me. But, I do my best work in my home office that I set up in my consulting days.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? When writing a marketing piece (white paper, webpage, etc.) I dictate it first and get the ideas out of my head ASAP. Then I edit it a copy of times for readability.

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best? My wife, my frat brothers that got me through undergrad school and Rev Kathianne Lewis, CSL Seattle
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “Be nice and treat everyone you interact with like you might be stuck in a very small room with them for a long time.”
