By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing

“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series.

Every week we feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become our standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m excited to feature Win Salyards, the newest member of the Heinz Marketing team.  Win has a background in fundraising, entrepreneurship and digital marketing.  Prior to joining our team, he spent time at OfferUp Inc. as well as on multiple political campaigns in Washington.  Win grew up in Dallas, TX where he founded a garden box business with his brother that helped them pay for college. He graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, with special focus on public art and architecture. In his free time he spends his time listening to as much music and reading.  Here in his own words is how he works.

Location: Seattle, WA

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Google Calendar, Google Maps, Audible

What’s your workspace like? I have a standing desk that I like to use as it keeps me active.  I try to keep my workspace clear so I can manage it easily.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Use newspaper to wash windows or other glass when you use Windex or other glass cleaners.  It cleans better and doesn’t leave streaks compared to paper towels.

What do you listen to while at work? Music.  The type changes day to day.  Sometimes ambient music like Brian Eno, other times jazz like Coltrane or Kamasi Washington.  I’ll even occasionally listen to an opera or two.

What are you currently reading? Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  It’s always okay to ask for help. Everything in moderation, including moderation.

Number of unread emails right now? 0 in my work email.  I won’t say how many I have in my personal email.

What is your email management strategy? I sort by importance and urgency work through those first.

First app checked in the morning? Reddit for news, and the weather app

Most essential app when traveling? Google Maps

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? Take breaks and stay moving

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance? It’s important to strive for but impossible to ever truly achieve 100% of the time.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success? Make sure to always check my calendar.  Conditional formatting and pivot tables are the best things for tracking a spreadsheet, and I use excel to track all my projects.

Name a guilty pleasure TV show  I don’t really watch tv, but I do enjoy watching YouTube videos.

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge? My parents – Paul and Oleta Salyards, and Bill Gietema

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best  My partner Melissa, and my brother Maverick

First thing you do when you come into work? Make a cup of tea and set up my workstation for the day.

Last thing you do before leaving work? Say goodbye and thank everyone.

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see BLANK answer these questions. Bob Boilen
