“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m excited to feature Vanessa Porter, director of marketing for SnapApp.  Vanessa has a proven track record as a successful B2B marketer, but look a little further and you quickly realize how well-rounded, busy and successful she really is.

She spent two-plus years in Honduras working in small villages for the Peace Corps, and remains active with the Peace Corps in the Boston Area.  She just finished earning her Masters in Sustainability & Environmental Management from Harvard.  She’s a Marketo Certified Expert.  The list goes on.

Vanessa, suffice it to say, gets stuff done.  Here is how she does it.

Location: Boston, MA

Current computers: 2- 1 personal and 1 work (work has two monitors)

Current mobile devices:  iPhone 6

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? EverNote, Spotify, Google (Everything), Marketo, SnapApp

What’s your workspace like? Open with a ton of windows. We recently moved offices, but thing is the same: my swag collection on my desk and my plants. I love the fun stress balls and I have a lucky bamboo I bought on my first day of work that follows me wherever I go.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Book meetings immediately and block out time on your calendar to reserve space. It seems like my whole calendar would be full with meetings if I didn’t save blocks of time to think. Early mornings are the best to get work done.

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Building a schedule. Maybe because I’m always thinking about time, but I’m pretty good and building campaigns from a start date or an end date. I’m constantly organizing to-do lists.

What’s your favorite to-do list manager? A piece of paper. Maybe it’s old school, but there’s something about taking ownership of everything you write down. If there’s no piece of paper, Evernote works wonders.

What do you listen to while at work? Spotify of the top 40 or something more low-key like Joshua Radin

What are you currently reading? The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

What’s your sleep routine like? Love my 8 hours– early to bed for an early start to the day. My dog loves his morning walks.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  If you’re not failing, you’re not trying hard enough. If you need help convincing your boss to do something, put the word “pilot” on it

Anything else you want to add? Build a routine at work which includes times to think and be creative

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see BLANK answer these questions. Heidi Bullock (Marketo)
