Our own “How I Work” series was inspired by one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series.

We regularly feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader on Thursdays.  If you missed some, catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week we are pleased to feature Patrick Welch, President & CMO at Bigtincan.  Patrick has more than six years with Bigtincan, leading US and EMEA operations where he oversaw the company through consistent year-over-year growth – most recently, holding role of Bigtincan’s President and COO. Prior to Bigtincan, Patrick held several sales leadership roles at companies including Apperian, Aveksa (acquired by EMC) and CA Technologies.  Here in his own words is how he does it:

First app checked in the morning? Email

First thing you do when you come into work? Check email and catch up.

What is your email management strategy? I file emails by quarter…

Most essential app when traveling? Depends on where I’m traveling, but apps like the American Airlines or Marriott applications are critical for me.

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? I really don’t stay calm, but focusing on the customer and then revenue growth usually helps me stay focused.

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance? Really try to be there when possible for my wife and my kids, be there for their games, their events and any other important activities.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success? Really staying focused on ensuring customer success, and making sure we have an open and collaborative environment, so challenges and issues can be raised quickly. Customer success call every night to make sure we’re staying focused on the customer and their success.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Hubspot,, Salesloft, LinkedIn Navigator, Conga and Quip for collaboration.

What’s your workspace like? It’s hectic, my office has some great pictures of my family, a huge monitor and two whiteboards.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Apple Watch, it’s truly incredible. Love the Heart Monitor GPS and notifications… Pretty awesome device!

What are you currently reading? Wooden – A lifetime of observations and reflections, on and off the court, Steve Jobs by Walter Isaac, and Groundswell by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff.

Last thing you do before leaving work? I check my Apple reminders and try to make sure my list is manageable – I also check the calendar too since as a very global company, so many times we have a bunch of calls or work to do in the evening.

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge?  I have too many to mention, but really learned a lot working with Deepak Taneja, founder and CTO at Aveksa; Tom Palka who ran sales at Netegrity, has been incredible mentor and influence in my career; and, Joe Gemma, professor and assistant Dean at Providence College, was extremely influential in helping me build a foundation for success in business.

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best?  My wife, Deirdre Welch, and my 3 kids…. They have been extraordinary with all the travel, and late nights of work.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? To really grow rapidly, you need to find companies that can really take advantage of the next set of paradigm shifts in the market.
