By Matt Heinz, President of Heinz Marketing
“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including Anthony Iannarino, Dave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.
Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions. You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.
This week I’m excited to feature Andrew Hull, president & founder of Elixiter. Andrew lives and works in beautiful Bozeman, Montana and has served a number of executive product marketing and marketing operations roles for companies such as Oracle, RightNow, ATI and more. He’s served as an entrepreneur-in-residence at Montana State University and his company has been named to the Inc 5000 as well as one of the 100 Best Workplaces for Women.
Here, in his own words is how he gets everything done.
Location: Bozeman, Montana
Current computers: MacBook Pro 15” booting direct to Windows 10 (Yep…you read that right. I love the Mac Hardware and Windows Software combo). It works great for me and we have the same setup for 45+ consultants. MacBook/Window10 has been a very solid combo for us. I am considering moving to the Microsoft Surface Laptop. I just need to test it out and see if the experience is as good as our current setup.
Current mobile devices: iPhone 6s
What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Excel is the hands down winner for me.
What’s your workspace like? I stand 90% of the time via a Veridesk. I only have two items on my desk. 1) Picture of my wife and three kids. 2) Candle. I have one going all the time since starting my company 6.5 years ago. It is good luck to have the concept of a flame burning all the time.
What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Not multi-tasking. I don’t have any software pop-ups or notifications turned on. I only work in one application / task at a time. When in meetings, I really avoid trying to answer email or other tasks as the same time.
What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Work intensity. While I do my best to avoid the 11,12 hour days, the time I do spend working I ensure is highly productive. In my opinion, it is the day to day consistency that builds and delivers the impact.
What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Evernote
What do you listen to while at work? Bob Dylan, instrumental, all the unique choices our 40+ consultants put on via our office wide SONOS system. What better way to experience a wide range of music each day?
What are you currently reading? Fablehaven Series by Brandon Mull. I love all the fantasy children’s book series. My kids are even too old for them now but I love escape.
What’s your sleep routine like? I am very regimented. Sleep by 9PM up by 4:30AM.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? “Seek first to understand, then be understood” – great one liner from Steven Covey’s 7 Habits but it has stuck with me for years.
