“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series.

For a few years now we’ve been doing our own with questions that have changed over time and which are now a favorite among our readers and subscribers.  Check here every Thursday when we feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week, we are pleased to feature Caroline Klatt who is the Co-founder and CEO of Headliner Labs the leading chat marketing platform for retail and e-commerce companies. Caroline’s been named to the Forbes 30 under 30 list for retail and e-commerce, is an advisor to the C-suite and innovation leaders at leading retail brands, and a regular columnist and speaker on the topics of digital sales, mobile marketing and machine learning.

Caroline honed her expertise in digital marketing and e-commerce at leading retailers including, Ralph Lauren and Collective Brands, and as a Management Consultant at McKinsey & Company in New York working with fortune 500 retailers and global financial institutions.  Here in her own words is how she does it all:

Location: New York, NY

Number of unread emails right now? I plead the fifth. But if I owe you an email, you’re not alone.

First app checked in the morning? Email, SMS, Whatsapp, in no particular order, followed by Instagram.

First thing you do when you come into work? Make coffee. It’s right by the entrance, and it’s too inefficient to walk back after I reach my desk.

What is your email management strategy? Constant. But don’t follow my lead. As stated above, could use improvement.

Most essential app when traveling? Waze. I simply don’t understand how we drove around new cities without it.

How do you keep yourself calm and/or focused? Snacks. Sugar is ideal, but I can work with carrot sticks and fruit when I’m trying to stay healthy.

What’s your perspective or approach to work/life balance? What balance ;)? In all seriousness, it’s 2018. Balance is being able to move fluidly between work and everything else and being flexible with it. I won’t ignore a call from my daughter’s school when I’m at the office, and I won’t ignore important work emails if I’m on vacation. I love my work, and I don’t need to disconnect completely to appreciate the other great things in life – time with my family, friends, working out, pursuing hobbies.

Are there any work rituals critical to your success? I don’t know about rituals, but I’m a big believer in the power of people. Helping others, collaborating, and working with partners is so critical to my success. I’ll meet with friends, friends of friends, talk to anyone who reaches out, give advice (when I’m qualified!), and always connect other people who might be able to work together. I love helping other people, and think it drives my own success.

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? Slack, Asana, e-mail, Facebook Messenger.

What’s your workspace like? Messy, and full of snacks.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Same lunch every day. One less decision to make.

What are you currently reading? The Everything Store. I read loads of biographies and this is as close as it gets for Jeff Bezos.

Last thing you do before leaving work? Emails.

Who are some mentors or influencers you wish to thank or acknowledge? Just my co-founder, Dana Gibber. I can’t think of a better working relationship than we have, and it makes all the difference. Probably helps that we’re sisters, but I actually think we’d be perfect business partners even if we didn’t share DNA. Also @garyjanetti for the exceptionally important work he does on Instagram 🙂

Name some supportive people who help make it possible to do what you do best? My team, my family, and the mentors I lean on for advice.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received? Do something you really love. It took me a long time to appreciate how true that is.

Name a guilty pleasure TV show: Jane the Virgin. And if it’s not your favorite show, it’s because you haven’t seen it.

Anything else you want to add? Always try to work with people who are smarter than you are!

Fill in the Blank: I’d love to see ____ answer these questions. Sarah Blakely. I’ll do whatever she does!
