“How I Work” is one of my favorite recurring features in Inc Magazine as well as via Lifehacker’s This Is How I Work Series, and recently several sales experts (including  Anthony IannarinoDave Brock and Trish Bertuzzi) participated as well.

Periodically moving forward, we will feature a new B2B sales, marketing or business leader here answering what have become the standard “How I Work” questions.  You can catch up on everyone we’ve featured thus far in the “How I Work” series here.

This week I’m thrilled to feature Janet Rubio CMO at True Influence.  Janet has been leading marketing organizations for more than 30 years, including leadership positions at Dell, Bulldog Solutions, Engauge Marketing and more.  Through her consulting endeavors she has also worked with companies such as Best Buy, OfficeMax, Sony, Apple and more.

Here, in her own words, is how she gets stuff done.

Location: After living in Austin, TX and working in the high tech industry since the mid 70’s, we escaped the traffic and craziness and moved to Georgetown, Texas about 30 miles north of Austin.

Current computers: Shamefully, I ran marketing for one of the divisions at Dell for 5 years and think they are great, but without Tech support at the ready, I am an Apple person.  My one and only computer is a MacBook Pro.  It goes with me everywhere and has my entire life stored on it!

Current mobile devices: What else other than more Apple products?!  iPad, iPhone

What apps/software/tools can’t you live without? A lot of my day is spent communicating ideas or sharing information so I would be lost without MS Office.  But as the person responsible for lead generation I eat my own dog food and rely heavily on InsightBASE to guide our efforts. Because we are a virtual company Skype is just like air … I use it to survive each day.  I’ve logged more Skype hours this year than I can count.  Finally, one of my necessities is  I hold down my staff costs by leveraging talent around the world on an as needed basis.  Once we find a great resource, they become an extension of our team.

What’s your workspace like? I have a home office with a 3’ x 6’ work table and two dog beds.  Invariably my work table is covered with notes, ideas, and research. I keep a notebook next to me at all times to jot down thoughts or things I need to remember to do.  Being old school, I also have two white boards hanging that are also covered most of the time.

What’s your best time-saving shortcut or lifehack? Write it down on paper because you become committed at that point.  If you just think it or talk about it, it’s not real.  When you commit it to paper, though, it stares back at you everyday until you make it happen.

What everyday thing are you better at than anybody else? Organization and task management.  People have told me that I can get more done in a short day than they can in several.  Maybe focus is a part of it also.

What’s your favorite to-do list manager? Good ole pen and paper and a detailed checklist.  I like the satisfaction of ticking them off.

What do you listen to while at work? I don’t think you can live in Texas and not have a fondness for country music.  While I like the really old artists as well as the new ones, the country music of the 80’s and 90’s is my favorite.  I’ve gotten my Don Williams Pandora station playing my favorites from that time period.  I will turn on News if there is a major event and leave it running on mute in the background just to keep up with what is happening.

What are you currently reading?  Sisters First, Y is for Yesterday, Rebecca, The Good Book.   I have a book in every room in my house and read whichever is handy.  I have been a subscriber to for about 15 years so I also have an audio book to listen to in my car.  My husband and I are big roadtrippers and start each trip with a new book.  I’m a bookclub member so I’m always reading something for those meetings also.  As an Army brat who moved every year, I spent many summer hours at the library waiting for school to start to meet new friends.  I have had a lifelong love of reading and books.  Occasionally I will fit a business or marketing book in the mix!  Maybe even the one I wrote!

What’s your sleep routine like?  Erratic.  Sometimes 3 hours because I have a lot to do or a lot on my mind.  Sometimes 9 hours just  because I can.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?  Don’t be an empty suit.  Show up everyday.  The president of Dell told me this back on the late 80’s and I’ve lived by it.  It not only makes you more successful, it makes the work much more interesting because you are truly invested in it.

Anything else you want to add?  I left the city (Austin) and moved to the country.  My neighbors are cows, horses, sheep, goats, and chickens!  “Lunch hour” frequently means helping a neighbor bottle feed an orphaned goat or lamb.  “Going for a ride” means climbing into a horse drawn cart for an evening sunset visit and glass of wine.
